The Pain of PatienceA Poem by Dan CowanOh, in the solitude of night my heart is a flaming stone aching, groaning, screaming craving a simple touch to be known an embrace to scrape a spark a tender word to soak my ears a pair of eyes to awaken longing gentle fingers to thread with mine bonding tears Sometimes I'm at peace Sometimes I'm just numb Sometimes I ache inside unable to sate my lungs I can clutch at my chest howl at the moon tie my hands to fists harrow my dour mood But alas, the only comfort to be found is within And, at times, the effort is tremendous I must exercise patience against my blazing heart Which feels like utter madness Asphyxiation of my ardor Evisceration of eagerness Smothering my writhing spirit Endeavor of a masochist Oh God, I need Your peace! Calm the torrent of these raging seas! Write my story how You see fit and give me the strength to accept and endure it to repose in peace and take hold of sleep To breathe in Breathe out and say so be it
