Bitter Pills

Bitter Pills

A Poem by Dan Cowan

Just another bitter pill on my tongue
Grimace and glug
Swallow it down and recall what I've sung
With burning lungs
God, I am growing weary of pill and pill
But I'll suck it up
For I know my grave will not be filled
'Fore I wade in muck

'You are my strength when I am weak
You are the treasure that I seek
You are my all in all'
Lord, carry me when my path grows steep
when the thorns are greedy for the flesh of my feet
'You are my all in all'
The Fire in my soul, the spine of my gall

I know that everything can only get worse
The deepening gloom
Soon I'll be in chains, the links are cursed
Inhaling fumes
And beaten for a Name that I've resolved to love
A glory divine
You'll be the heart that pumps my blood
Endurance to strive

So let the rain fall from skies above
Weeping for the lies that we sell and love
You'll be the hands that harden my bones
That lift me up and welcome me home
Amidst the carnage that I hear and see
when I taste the pain that trails my belief
with grace I will stand and pay my fee
For 'You are my strength when I am weak
You are the treasure that I seek
You are my all in all'

The Endurance in my name
The Fire in my soul
The Patience of my way
The only name I hold

This is one of the most interesting depictions I've read describing one's unique relationship with God. I've never been one to go in for convention, so I love how this sounds unconventional, a friendship, a daily alliance, rather than some supplication to a higher power. I love how you're not trying to show this narrator's "best side" facing God, nor do you demean this narrator as being horribly out of sync with God. Instead, this is the everyday friendship that happens when He is the main one you turn to, right or wrong, good or bad, up or down. It takes the pressure off our human relationships becuz we're not putting all this crap on others -- most people are too self-absorbed or distracted to be the sounding board many of us wish we had. It's all there -- it's in the way we invite God into our everyday truths (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
