A Psalm To GloryA Poem by Dan Cowan
A letter to God from the pen of a sinner:
How am I worth the grace You deliver? When I gave my back to Your wounded face and walked away to wanton disgrace Pursuing lusts and selfish ambition I forgot my Love and rejected contrition I found a world of suicide dreams in the depths of a well that ingested me The stones at the bottom were cold and slick and I quickly detested my life in the pit Inhaling the ink into burning lungs I despaired of life and considered it dung And just when I had a mind to end it all with a palmful of pills and a vacant call You seized me with blessed hands and guided me without reprimand through the blackness that devoured my will toward a thread of light no thicker than a pill And as I approached, it widened like a door a flood of light that soaked to my core It burst aflame under my tapestry of skin a fire eternal that won't gutter or dim For You sought me in the darkness with an emanance of Love and devastated my hold so that I could reach far above Oh gracious Lord, you have pulled me from the mud and stood me on a rock before a cross of blood On that cross, Your son was crucified and on that ground, I let myself die for the glory of Your name, that rock on which I stand Always a fire beneath my flesh, lit by mighty hands Forever my flesh is a fabric undone Oh Lord above, this is my vow of Love
