FireA Poem by Dan Cowan
There was a time once
when my arms ran red with want that ink had stained my mind and confusion reigned in the blaze of hope defunct Demons awoke behind my eyes bearing fruit that noxiously wise They peddled their poison and readied chains to snare me with horror's guise I floundered in the fire Alone Jabbed and stuck with briars I groaned Pulling open red lines Rusted razors With pain, I was blind Casket maker Then there came a time when I exhumed the will to fight and prayed in earnest for the night to break by the grace of Jesus Christ Now lifted from the fire and climbing ever higher with a spine of stone that refuses to shake I cry 'Put me in the fire!' I crave the muck and mire tests by trials of fire Now unafraid of the path of pain I beg the fist to hit me harder Bring me Hell and vipers Bring me skies of stormy weather Bring me leech and freezing rain and watch my God arise the victor But make no mistake, my friend it is not my spine that contends but the power of Christ that destroyed the grave that gives me the will to not bend It was by fire that I nearly died and by fire that I stand upright So if you want a spine that welcomes the flame find courage in Jesus Christ For He has made my spine like stone and it's in the fire that I now call home
