Humble Beginnings

Humble Beginnings

A Poem by Damita Taylor

                                         Humble beginnings

Time ain’t money, watch who you spend it with, there’s no way to buy it back

You can’t gain nor lose the years you lack

Special you are so intact, reaching for the stars

Such a wonderful trip to have in mind

Diamonds, all jewels that is authentic

But unlike life they cost and can be rented

I was told to uphold an image

People would consider extraordinary

So today my pants suit is dark blue

$500 of hard earned loot

Clipped on my runway bezel, I had a feel for gold

Slid in my peep toe pumps to match

They should be impressed with that

No chauffer, but a cab should do, no food to eat, bills are due

Appearance isn’t everything; I hate to hear my phone ring

They should disconnect that too

So today, I grabbed my resume, before I left the steps, I decided to pray

As I recited my misfortunes I swore I heard Him say

“Special you are so intact, reaching for the stars

That’s such a wonderful trip to have in mind for a child like Mine”

I was dressed and they were impressed but they never paid attention to my runway bezel

Abstract things soothes me much better.
