I'm Sorry Mom (Poem)

Last writing I will be submitting for a while, I figured I should write a tribute to my mother.

I'm sorry mom,

For all the times I went against what was right.

You told me,

"When someone talks, boy, you look them in the eye."

I'm sorry,

You expected something great from my life.

But the drugs quickly dimmed

Who you've always thought was bright.

You saw me,

Go through s**t you could hardly understand.

You screamed out.

Could you see remnants of my old man?

I'm sorry,

The path I chose was not part of the plan.

But you kept up with support,

And always lent a helping hand.

I would starve.

I left home at sixteen, living on my own.

Then I'd call,

"Hey mom, think you could bring me just a loaf?"

She'd show up,

A car-load full of groceries, soap for laundry loads.

Then I'd wonder to myself,

"Why the f**k did I leave home?"

Not much changed,

I can't seem to keep a grip on success.

Addiction beat,

Though I can't say that I'm better than the rest.

I got my girl...

Am I a good dad, come on, let's be honest.

Mom, I need a true answer...

Mom, how can I fix this?

this is nothing short of brilliant, a wonderful tribute to your Mom. Great rhyme and flow, all the while shedding the light through your heart, of how much you love and appreciate your Mom, mixed in with some regret. Remember: we all make our own mistakes and a lot of times most of just get lost walking down the correct path. This is a very poignant write, simply amazing! I love the end as you depicted that things are a bit better for you, so hold your head up high and keep writing, looks like you found your own, right path again. Thanks for sharing :)

you're quite welcome! i know the feeling as i have two poems about my Grandmother that also sort of depicts the same exact feelings you expressed in this write (The Ghost of You ) and (Alma) which desperately needs to be revised (it's horribly written lol) for me it was the guilt (still guilt) over the fact i feel i never showed her enough love nor gratitude that she so deserved. now...it's too late, so i like i stated, i know the feeling too well, be well :)

They will in time, could be a lot of time haha. As long as we stay true and good to our children, they will find their love no matter what.

What a wonderful, heartfelt poem, filled with emotion. You can feel the sadness and regret. The fact that you wrote this, and put it up here for everyone to see, speaks volumes about how sorry you are and how much you love your mother.

Regarding whether or not you're a good father -- simply asking that question makes you better than many/most.
