Insignificant Others

Insignificant Others

A Poem by The Winter Grey
"

The unnerving discord of discourse.

"

Strained pleasantries,

Maligned with discontent.

Porcelain handshakes, pale and distant eyes.

Strangers estranged,

And numb conversation.

Impassioned indifference, psalmic in silence.

Surgical precision,

Storms raging underneath.

Forever possessed by your favorite fallacy.

The house settles,

We become furniture.

Watching dust swirl in cold shafts of daylight.

Dilating diffidence,

Every twitch out of place.

Peripheral angles blur into shadow.

Furious, feral,

Imagination darkly.

I bare my teeth and rip the smile from your face.

Placid, jejune.

Lost to the unassuming.

Amiably, we part, not a smile out of place.

Author's Note

The Winter Grey
There are certain people in my past I loathe to come in contact with. After all that has passed between us, both beautiful and heinous... it all boils down to a tense, darkly uncomfortable, utterly and tragically uneventful conversation.

I find the title and the poem to be kind of contradictory, but that in itself is well worth contemplating, I think.
The poem is very... sort of stubborn? Like when you hate someone so much, just to realize you've spent all day thinking about them, and then stubbornly tell yourself that they are too insignificant to think about at all, convincing yourself to hate them a little more. It's actually a bit comical, if you think about it, despite the obvious frustration.
As the seriously pessimistic person I am, I like this. And even though it may just be my own interpretation, I did enjoy the comical aspect the title gave it.

There is so much alliteration in this piece and as an English major that makes me quite happy! :D But on a more serious note, I admire your ability to transcend events from life to poetry in a way that is purely your style. It's done in a *real* way and never comes off as a cheap imitation of life. You submerge your readers into the moment and paint the image beautifully. Very well done.

I understand that fully.. It's better when I find my way around them. Great expression.
