WonderA Story by DakAlways question, always wonder In
his book, The Consolation of Philosophy, Boethius wrote “Philosophy delivered
this sweet and gentle song with dignity of countenance and gravity of
expression”. Don’t ask me anything else about the book, because I haven’t read
a word inside. I’d bet that anyone who actually has read the book doesn’t
remember this quote in it anyway. So how and why do I know of this completely
obscure sentence in a book I’ve never read? Well a friend of mine was
struggling to get by in her English class. So, as most stressed teenagers do
she complained about it, and in the midst of her rant she read me the sentence
mentioned before, disgusted with how convoluted it was to her. Annoyed with the
situation, I attempted to calm her so that we could both get on with our day. Later on however, those words buzzed
on in my head “Philosophy delivered this sweet and gentle song with dignity of
countenance and gravity of expression”. I wrote it down for further analysis.
Who or what does Philosophy represent and who is the sweet and gentle song for?
What was the gentle song? Why does Philosophy handle it so delicately? Of
course I could pick up a copy of the book and find out for myself, but then
there’s no room to wonder. Maybe, Philosophy is a person and she was delivering upsetting news to someone in a sweet and gentle manner
in order to ease the pain of the stinging message. Maybe, there was a man who was in the middle of a rough time in
his life, with Murphy’s Law in full effect, and this man’s burden was lifted by an almost supernatural force. He was so grateful to be feeling
better it was as if he was filled with a sweet and gentle song. Maybe, if someone were to hear the sweet and gentle
song, they would become wise, but the dark truths that accompany the song are
plentiful, so it has to be presented with a dignified face and heavily
weighed expression.
The possibilities are endless. I never have to know
what it truly means. It can represent anything I want it too, if I think about
it long enough.
Whenever I feel as though I have a firm grasp on what the world around me has to offer, I think of Philosophy and her song. © 2015 DakAuthor's Note
