Never forgetful

A thought about all the sacrifices made in world war two.

We should never be
If it were not for thee.
If you had not left your wife,
If you had not left your children.

We should never be,
And certainly would not be free,
If you had not left your wife,

We should never be,
Forgetful, but thankful towards thee.
For having left your wife,
For having left your children.

The WWII vets grew up in hard times and they were a tough breed. We should never forget

I have an aged Uncle still alive..(90 yrs), who attended Dunkirk when he was in the RN. Like my father he was in minesweepers.....very brave men. Neither will/would speak of their exploits or medals. Only one story I have heard...my father on deck, attacking aeroplanes coming at their little wooden ex fishing trawler armed with one machine gun, and the machine gunner literally lost his head, whilst my father was with him, so he took over the gun and survived. As I said this was a second hand story...I cannot imagine how men can be so brave. I will never forget them.

No you are correct. I mean yes you are right...it is not written right, it must be plural...but I was mindful of my father who spent all the war fighting in the RN, there were five children at home with his wife. On return home, over the next few years, there came four more....and then there were nine! Amazing.

Yes, I often think of my paternal grandfather, going over the trenches into the machine gun fire in 1917 at Arras. My father was twelve then.

Well said, Sami. I wrote this spontaneously last night, as I was stimulated to do so, by reading Samuel Dickens. His words brought back memories of my own family in world war two, (and one). Thanks for this review.
