Broken

Broken

A Poem by Ember Smyth

Bought an oven
Had a kid
Liked the new oven
Liked the new kid

The oven cooks food right
The kid gets good grades, right?

Something wrong with the oven
Something wrong with the kid
Kick the oven
Yell at the kid

The food out of the oven is a ghastly sight
The kid got into many a fight

A repairman for the oven
A therapist for the kid
Easy to fix the oven
Easy to fix the kid

The repairman says the oven will set food alight
The therapist says the kid isn't alright

Broken is the oven
And broken is the kid
Throw out the oven
And throw out the kid

Keep the kid! Jeez!

I like the pairing. There has always been a notion that having children is part of the grand chain of accomplishments or failures that ends up defining a life. I've known those who treated their possessions like they were children and children as if they were simply possessions. This poem really speaks to the way we have built our existence into systems and processes that are the maintenance tools we use to clean up our lives. Very interesting.
