Fire

Fire

A Poem by Chelsea Schermerhorn

It seems so strange to me
how something so destructive
can, at the same time be
beautiful and beneficial.
When the red-orange flames roar up
and consume that which is combustible
and you see the scorching blue center,
the base of the flames,
it can instill in you such a peace.
This peace exists because,
even when all seems destroyed and over,
there is still hope.
Like a phoenix rising from its ashes,
life will rise anew;
even when all seems lost.
When all has collapsed and is dead,
it makes way for new and better things.
May we learn from these gorgeous,
yet terrifying flames,
a glorious creation of God's hands.

I prefer the Greek myth of how humans received fire.
