Champagne Supernova

A Poem by Derek Thiem
"

A poem about addiction and the cosmos

Champagne Supernova

Scintillating ecstasy enters me

and my consciousness expands like infinity--

The universe pushing ever outward

from one big bang--

An explosion created by the tension

of all things pushed together--

From shopping lists and appointment cards

to the continuum of time and space,

the density of the moment

suddenly large enough to crush god.

The B O O M! And off we go

for fourteen billion years running away

away away, stretching out thinner

and  t h i  n   n   e     r

until we are so thin there is nothing left

we can think to do but keep running

from that original moment of conception,

spreading out until we break apart

and blend back in to the starlight.
