My Mom's Beauty

My Mom's Beauty

A Poem by Donna Jitchotvisut
"

As part of our memorial to our Mom, each of us created or performed something in her honor. I wrote "My Mom's Beauty" to celebrate our mother's life from my first memories of her.

"

My Mom’s Beauty

Soft as kitten silk, warm as summer’s dawn;

glorious ash-blond crown kissed by the sun.

Perfumed by rain-swept lawns and sun-drenched gardens fair,

My Mom’s beauty was in her hair.

Eyes, alpine lake blue rippling with love’s sacred light,

long-visioned, close-seeing and true,

filled with laughter, wisdom, sometimes mischief, too.

My Mom’s beauty was in her eyes.

Birthday mysteries, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, too,

so full of happy secrets " fit to burst at the seams;

her mission:  only to fulfill our dreams;

My Mom’s beauty was in her creativity.

Cheeks, tawny velvet, soft to the touch, framed the smile I love so much.

Lips softly turned up, almost never down;

seldom knew the shape of a frown.

My Mom’s beauty was in her smile.

Strong, sturdy, sun-tanned shoulders; long-reaching arms,

shifting dry wall, running Perfa-tape;

pushing a wheel barrow, wielding a rake;

putting up tomatoes and beans or baking a cake.

My Mom’s beauty was in her strength.

Quick, clever fingers with practical magic charms;

soothing skinned knees, or cooling sun-burned arms;

salving broken spirits; or rescuing orphaned wild babes

were often folded in prayer;

My Mom’s beauty was in her hands.

An earth goddess risen from righteous sleep’s soft embrace,

feet softly gliding, shadows fleetly flying with her smile wakes the dawn,

a song on her lips heralding healing in her touch,

My Mom’s beauty is in her love.

Author's Note

Donna Jitchotvisut
I do not often write poetry, but this is one of my better efforts. My Mom was an amazing woman - truly beautiful and feminine; yet as strong as a man when the situation demanded it. She walked with God and channeled His love to everyone whose life she touched.
