Shackles

Shackles

A Poem by Sarah Jane

When I was a young girl, I'd sing pretty songs
And dream of the days I'd be free
Free from the shackles placed firmly at birth
By parents who knew nothing better
When I was a lady, I'd sing pretty songs
And dream of the days I'd be free
Free from the shackles placed firm by the church
To a husband who thought he knew better
As an old bird, I sing pretty songs
And know one day soon I'll be free
Free from these shackles placed firmly at birth
In a world that never got better

From cradle to grave you paint a stark vision with illuminating wisdom and melancholy. Nicely done Sarah. Poetic as it is tragic. CLE
