Consequences

Consequences

A Poem by Sarah Jane

Writhing beneath the surface

A seedling sprouts.

Innocence streams onward

Crushed effortlessly by the earth

Who dare deny me

Defying gravity, defying death

Resisting wilt and weather,

I push on.

Trembling towards warmth,

To dewy days in pasture.

Moments of clarity, victory

Breaking encasing of land

Blankets of filth.

Who dare dismiss me

With simple beauty

I bloom.

With freedom comes fines.

Confined by strong roots

Secured in solitary

Who dare disregard me

I bare my pollen

Like rabid teeth

Mistaken for smiles

I am plucked

Snipped and somber

I lay broken in glass

Awaiting inevitable wilt

Inescapable death

Who dare destroy me

I am life.
