Listening Carefully

Listening Carefully

A Poem by Sarah Jane

Monotonic, my heart beats.
Sustained only by the rhythm
Vocalized by these speakers.
I've never been here before, so
I steal confidence from strangers.
Inside the mind of a "regular",
building report with imagination.

Placid, my heart trills
Endured only by hushed nothings
Breathed sweetly from brushed lips
I've never been here before, so
I pull from the corners
Until I feel level-headed again
Only to dive in for more.

Fleeting, my heart drums
Grounded only by the muscles
I cling to for substance
I've never felt this before, so
Veiling my vulnerabilities
I push away any haste ideas
Of letting go.

Steady, my heart thrums
Entwined with hesitation
Freedom has found me
In the most accepting ways.
I've never seen it before, but
I see it when he smiles
And its terrifying.
