3-Act Play in 12 Lines

Jack: “What’s the second best thing in your life, Jill?”

Jill: “Second? Why not ask me what’s first?”

Jack: “Family-and-friends is everybody’s sweet-and-dutiful first. I want your second.”

Jill: “Okay. Family and friends.”

Jack: “Jeez, Jill! I just said I don’t want your first.”

Jill: “But, family-and-friends really is my second!”

Jack: “ … As in, cross-your-heart-and-hope-to-die really?”

Jill crosses her heart. “Anticipation is my first.”

.   .   .

Jack: “Anticipation of what?”

Jill: “Anything, everything. Of relieving my bladder, of sipping margaritas in the tropics.”

Jack: “Why, because it inevitably beats gratification?”

Jill: “With the exception of relieving my bladder, yes.”
