The Teaching Dragon

How about a dragon as your teacher?

An author named Xing Lao was at home. He was a famous author who travels, so he was at Japan at the time. He was writing a story about a great man named Chen.

His name meant pure and upright. However, he was the opposite. He was born in China and he was incredibly arrogant and spoiled. He forced kids to be his so called “companions” and everyone was just a coward to stand up to him. He always told them to do things for him, bribed everyone, and always breaks his deals and promises.

This kept on going on until everyone left him because they finally had the courage to go against him. He ended up always being alone. And did he care? No, because he thought he was very superior therefore people are unable to be his friend. Chen never knew that he was being so mean so he never understood the real reason why his “friends” left him.

However, one night, the unexpected happened, while he was sobbing about his loneliness before his sleep a spirit of a dragon appeared.

The dragon said, “I am a dragon spirit who will guide you to your dreams and goals,” the dragon sighed, “You have a long way to go,”

The boy responded harshly and yelled, “What are you and what is a dragon doing here? You will never understand me! Why would I need help from a dead dragon?”

His yell made a disturbance in the house and his mom came running in and asking what he was yelling at. The boy pointed at the spirit but the mother said that he was pointing at the wall. He looked back but the spirit was still there.

“You are the one and only who is able to see me” the dragon said.

The boy roared, “This is stupid why are you even here!?”

However the dragon did not respond.

“Whom are you talking to? Go to sleep, we have to go somewhere tomorrow” the mother said. While she was leaving she also mumbled, “Strange son”

Chen woke up and his mom told him that his father is sick so they cannot leave the house without the dad. Because of this he stayed home and he ended up seeing the spirit once again.

“Why am I the only one to see you? Chen asked confusingly and frustrated.

“You are the only one to see me because you need help. Through my assistance you will become a mannered pure man,” the dragon responded.

The boy said, “See if you can make me! I can make my path of life and you won’t stop me from reaching my dream to be in the government. However, I do not understand why everyone laughs at me when I say that”

The spirit closed his eyes and said, “You have yet to begin starting that dream of yours. You will need knowledge to pass the test to work in the government.”

Years passed and he was still with the dragon, but through his assistance he became intelligent, knowledgeable, and pure. He even had his own family.

Everyone relied on him and he was always complimented and some people that met him in his childhood didn’t even believe that he was Chen they used to know. The dragon always helped him, and one day when he passed the test to enter into the government he ran back home to tell the news to the dragon. He looked around but he was not there. Chen waited and waited wanting to tell him. Weeks passed but the dragon still did not come.

One day in his dream he met the dragon and Chen asked why he was not coming to him. The dragon said, “You do not need me anymore. You have fulfilled your dream and you have your own family already,”

Chen woke up and had an idea. He got clay and sculpted for days and days until it was done. The sculpture was shaped as the dragon spirit.

In despair, he wrote a poem talking about that he and the dragon spirit is one.

After finishing, it gave him courage to stand up and walk towards his path of life. “Looking back”, he said to his son, “I think I just saw a faint outline of a helping hand. If only people could just know about this story of the teaching dragon.”

Some say that he is still waiting for his arrival after his death.

Xing Lao finished his story. As he came back home, he looked at a picture and said, “Look at how many people love you, father in heaven, even the story is known by everyone” he put the picture down, smiled and fell asleep.
