Copper Crown

Copper Crown

A Poem by D Connolly
"

I was startled by the beauty of a tree in my neighbor's yard

"

Twas trick of yonder setting sun cast gold upon the grounds

The lengthening of shadows made monsters of my hounds

Looking towards the bleeding sky to watch the sun go down

I was romanced into poetry by the copper of your crown

I tried to name the color, but names, they do abound...

A lighter shade than ochre, not quite a sultry brown

More golden than a fallow, camel, or any tawny that I've found

No, there's nothing quite as pretty as the copper of your crown

I looked up, and the golden sunlight was perfectly highlighting the top of this tree. Who knows if it was a trick of the light, but the color was just startling and beautiful

'Copper Crown'
D. Connolly,
You brought me right to where your eyes were. Your neighbors copper crowned tree must have been spectacular. It sounds like it was an unexpected gem of a time-of a moment. Sometimes we are jolted from the regularity of life and reminded that our souls are made to respond to the beauties and charms of nature. I am so glad this was shared. We are made better for these experiences and reminders of them from what we share with others as you have done.
Blessings,
Kathy

Very nicely done I find! The rhyme in every single line. Descriptions strong but still combine. A fuller picture to enshrine. The golden crown at twilight-time. So wondrous pure and sweet sublime. Like droplets glassed on chilled white wine. There really is no other kind!

Sunlight at the start and close of days is so wonderfully intense. Like you, I adore the way it colours the grass and trees. The world feels safer, somehow, more at one. Very nicely done!

Hi Tom! Thank-you!
LOVE THIS! What an excursion of word play! I love the extended rhyme of only a single sound, along with the bouncy rhythm that speaks to the fun you're having at that moment. Such great imagination: "monsters of my hounds" . . . "ochre not quite a sultry brown" (love it when poets use a variety of unusual colors) . . . & the title phrase, too. I love the way you stretched this experience out for the reader, so we could savor it with you.

Having an owl to spy over the coming weeks is a special treat! (((HUGS)))
Such fine meter and a wonderful description about your glorious surroundings. Every day outdoors has its own magical tones, whether vibrant or subtle In fact, temperamental Nature is where Life truly is..

' Looking towards the bleeding sky to watch the sun go down ' - thinking over that phrase really paints a mind picture!

This is short and sweet and right to the point...I hike in the woods a lot in the summers and often get swept away by the beauty of nature. Well done, well written my friend! :) x

Thanks Kathryn!
you have captured our dilemma perfectly ... we see beauty evrywhere but now how to get it out ..i like this poem a lot because it not only captures the aspirations but the work and struggle writers go though to present something spectacular, spectacular for others to have the same experience ... (i do think you mean caramel not camel in L7;)
i like the overall font and line spacing .. it makes your poem instantly clear and easy flowing ... before even reading ... i take our wonder dog Bella out early in the morning and when the moon is so very bright (as in the snow moons of the last several days) it throws shadows from the trees and moon glow all over the ground .. i do not even begin to attempt to describe it ... but one of these days i may .. very enjoyable read for me Big D!

We have a lime tree whose leaves become brown on top, but white underneath in autumn which
creates a beautiful pattern of contantly changing colour, so I can fully appreciate the effect of your poem.
