The Curl Of My Hair

The Curl Of My Hair

A Poem by D Connolly
"

What we dislike about ourselves might be beautiful to someone else

"

I struggled with my hair before work

Weighing the idea of snipping that bit by my ear

That curl has a mind of it's own

Daily its ugliness torments me!

Deciding to live with the disgrace

I turned my head at the coffee maker

So as not to offend the innocent bystander

        Turning to me she says

"Did you do something to your hair?"

I had accepted the curl; now became self conscious

"I think I brushed it differently this morning"

Her warm eyes smiled as she said

"I love that little curl by your ear, its so cute."

Author's Note

Maybe once in a while we get down on ourselves for the silliest things (I know I do), maybe we don't "fit in" or look just like we wished. But our little quirks are what distinguishes us in other people's eyes.

D Connolly,
Thank you for sharing another honest look at a window of the every day process. Within we process as well. What are we feeling? Why do we feel that way. Our hair is like a covering, a presentation of who we are. It is natural to want to be our best. I loved how this curl was a metaphor for something which needed attention and is the catalyst for a fine message. Accept who we are as we try to accept others.
cool writing!

Kathy

my pleasure...
We do often perceive ourselves in a bad light. I did so for years and it got out of control. Now I'm going bald and I wish I could have those old problems again. But, what is...is.

Learning to love ourselves is a process. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly...
Aww, how true it is that those things we may be self conscious about others will find endearing and cute.
We should not be so hard on ourselves. Thank you for the reminder.

I agree. The little quirks are what defines us as individuals. Being different, even in a small way makes that person more interesting in my less than humble opinion.

I don't find this silly. It is actually quite a good point to be made, (he said pretentiously) This is wit. And you are right. It is how others percieve us. I once thought that there are three people inside everyone. How we see ourselves; how others see us and how we actually are. Excellent work.

See! :) we never know how others see us. Your words are a perfect reflection for how critical we can be of ourselves.
Your message is an important one. Starz x

I like the message behind this. Oftentimes the things we pick at ourselves over are what others think the opposite of. The rhyme flow is smooth and tightly structured which seems to be a trademark of yours, as well as turning the smallest of moments into sweeping poetry. Thank you for sharing!

this shows how one is so self-critical and can obsess over such a small detail others may admire

You need that girl in your bathroom every morning.
At least till she says, your hair is a mess. Always the little things that do your head in.

hmm. very true. we are often attracted to what we cannot/do not have but that is the 'good stuff' of life.
