Shimmer

Shimmer

A Poem by D Connolly
"

A shimmer in the road provokes an imaginative response

"

I saw a shimmer in the road

What it was I didn't know

It was round and flat, shiny blue and green

I had to look

It could be anything!

Did someone lose a necklace?

Wouldn't that be funny?

I could take it to the pawn shop

To make some quick money

Or maybe its a dragon scale

That fell out of the sky!

I must have missed the great beast

As he soared gracefully by

It could be an amulet

That transports you to another world

Where magic is the realest thing

And there's castles made of pearl

OOOH!  What if it's an alien ship

Crash landed from outer space?

With tiny vicious beings

Sent to destroy the human race

Or, maybe it's a compass

But not with normal mechanics

Instead of pointing North and South

It locates moons and planets!

What if it is full of life

Like a small primordial pool?

Where awesome creatures are forming

That would be so cool!!

When I got close enough to see what it was

I had to laugh and that's because

It seems the shimmer in the road

Was a bunch of flies

Eating a toad

LOL. I love this poem...and I love how your mind works. I've often told my brother that we don't think alike. He thinks like a rifle shot...straight to the point...direct. I'm a shotgun blast. I'm just all over the place...all the what if's...all the possibilities. I think you're a shotgun too! Great poem. Thank you for the post.

I am not sure if you are aware of this, but this piece seems to evoke many movie/anime references!

This poem made me laugh and smile, brought me on a journey through to that road and your pondering magical imagination evoking excitement. And the rhyming, wonderfully engaging!

Great job, at telling a story, evoking imagery and emotion!

Much love,

LR

No, I hadn't noticed, but it isn't surprising. I love movies and anime, stories, heroic tales... you.. read more
A delightful poem. I had a similar experience, only it was the biggest rat I ever saw --- thought it was a cat or a dog I would rescue. Scared the living daylights out of me ...

ha! very funny
This flows so easily and flawlessly, you get lost in the wonder of it's visuals. Each stanza is increasingly whimsical much like the daydreams they describe. I liked the compass most of all, probably because I love stargazing. Thanks for sharing!

D. Connolly,
How fun it was to read your vignette! You had me right from the first word. So much creative energy you possess! Just keep it up I love it so. I found myself wishing you had actually had one of your wishes come to reality. Wow that would be amazing! Blessings Kathy

The rhyming here is spot on and not dragged out or cut too short. The scenarios you present for consideration are interesting and funny too. Real life pulverizing whimsical dreams. Now that's something I can relate to quite well.

Yes, definitely! Thank-you for reading!
HA! I wondered if it might be some sort of roadkill early on, as my mind is strange, too. This poem is excellent in every way and most entertaining. Have you read it to some children? I can just imagine the delightful howls.
