I had been walking with my head down,
counting cracks, all day. Wafting between the sweetness of summer lemonade
stands slipped a smell I knew but couldn't place. I looked up to see him
sitting nose in book by the café door. I think we must have passed before;
the scent creeping up like a memory. But his face I didn't know; my familiar
feeling aside. Chalk scrolled on the cafe sign above his head readVous êtes au bon endroit. Ne cherchez plus.
In recognition I stopped to say hello.
English Translation: "You are in the right place. Look no further."
I know this feeling, I have smelled it, breathed it in myself, felt familiarity crawl up my spine and realize that I have met my future.... Sometimes I call this fate, and sometimes the reading of energy... Never knowing what to believe, I follow such a feeling anyway... So your story takes me here... Well expressed.

Yes sense memory is very powerful. In this lifetime or any other I think.
This is great. You tied the title and words all together to create this wonderful story. I smiled when I finished, like I knew a secret the MC hasn't figured out yet, and a thousand possibilities flooded my mind. And I think you have expressed something we can all relate to. Maybe not in terms of love, or soul mates per se, but in that certain smell or feeling you recognize, but can't place.

I know it gives the idea at the end of a soul mate but that wasn't the goal for me. It was the smell, the sense of recognition, something both unfamiliar and utterly known at the same time. I used to feel this anytime I passed someone that wore my grandmother's perfume. I was transported. Thank you.
Love this! So well done...these are the things I imagine happening in terms of love. Finding that person who you have been with through the centuries; a stranger but not a stranger. The term "soul mate" comes to mind, despite the trite nature. Reminds me of one of my favorite movies, "The Fountain'...a lovestory through the ages.
