The Burmese Recess

The Burmese Recess

A Poem by D
"

Three separate poems eventually came together in this piece; I'm assuming the layers were either augmented or destroyed.

"

Sunset on the Irrawaddy Delta—
well, what the hell can I say?
We’ve amber waves in this
continental, monumental
United American Enterprise,
and purple mountains, sure.
Even vascular states that aim
to replenish us in the off-season
antics of independent living. But.
Here lay the rice and the ranges,
edged by bamboo and mangrove,
trailed by tigers and gibbon gangs.
That glimmer on the limestone,
monsoons singing glory-hey
let’s prize the day because we
live in the Tropic of Cancer.
Sit and watch, bask and glow.
There’s nothing in the music
sung by legion dead presidents.

I really like the beginning, and the concept is great (the concept itself is overplayed, but you told it well, I think). The end feels a bit frayed, probably since the poem was originally three poems, and this line right here,"trailed by tigers and gibbon gangs", doesn't seem quite right. It's the word "trailed."

But regardless thanks for writing. I enjoyed this.
