Babies "R" Us

Babies "R" Us

A Poem by Cyprian Van Dyke
"

Pop art: Who Framed Roger Rabbit's Baby Herman with Baby Cupid. A poem about love and maturity

"
“Mixing drinks like a mad scientist.
I’m in love and want out of it,”
Says Baby Herman.
Sitting in his crib with a cigar in hand.
“When are you - gonna grow up?
When are you -  gonna be a man?”
Says Baby Cupid.
“You - should give Shakespeare back his pen.
You shoot someone with it,
And his life’s planned out for him.
A man can’t live like that!
Something unexpected comes up,
And he's all off track!”
Says Baby Herman,
Taking another puff of smoke like the big bad wolf.
“Just give it more time. She’ll come back.
You just got to be a better guy.
Let me give you another shot, then I got to fly,”
Says Baby Cupid.
He hovers, his bow in one hand,
And in the other, an arrow.
“Hold up! The last time was the last time.
You shoot me one more time,
I’ll shoot you with a small  gunpowder arrow
From behind as you fly,”
Says Baby Herman.
“Hahahaha, that’s what you say every time,”
Says Baby Cupid.
Cupid  shoots Herman again
Until his beating heart shapes out his chest
And little birdies dance around his little head.

"Just give it more time. She’ll come back.
You just got to be a better guy."

There's a lot going on in this poem from Baby Cupid to Shakespeare, all tied together with a string called love. But, let me just zoom in on the above quote. Ir reiterates what "relationship experts" are saying left and right. One day I'd love to discover whether it's really true. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. There are lots of really cool lines in this poem ("I’m in love and want out of it/
When are you - gonna grow up?/When are you -  gonna be a man?") that are so meaningful to me, and I guess to a lot of others as well that have been shot by Baby Cupid.

I love this quote, it all sounds like the dialogue in something official, a book, or a movie. Your writing never fails to be so nice and relaxing to read. And the rhyming is great. It's such an interesting poem and I'm always interested in reading someone's take on cupids.
