Superman and Juliet

Superman and Juliet

A Poem by Cyprian Van Dyke
"

Superman and Lois Lane/Romeo and Juliet

"

Lois Lane, a nerds Juliet,

Waits on her balcony

For Superman.

Clark Kent descends,

As a nerds Romeo,

Superman!

Lois walks to him

As he slowly lands.

He speaks words of love

In his Kryptonian language.

She responds with love

But in English.

As Lois Lane feels

Superman’s body of steel,

She also feels...

A soft touch.

And after Superman saw

Lois Lane’s graceful walk

under the flame

That is her body,

They finally - kiss.

And for the first time in

Lois Lane’s life

She can understand her hearts morse code.

It translates “Clark Kent”

Synonyms are, “Romeo,” “Superman.”

But he knew the whole time that

His heartbeat translates “Lois Lane,”

Synonym “Juliet.”

and the love affair falls to the archenemy ."tragedy" ... for me this is a delightful read as the nerds and dorks of us rise on super power wings of love ...we do have a chance after all ... very smooth free form and your straight forward language brings the story home clear as a bell ... relating it to Shakespeare is clever ... it works and elevates the whole scene conjured ... so for me! i like it! fun, yet serious.

The first line had me smiling, I loved the nerdy comparison to and old yet timeless love story. It was a delightful read. I look forward to reading your stories and other pieces of work.

I can't tell you what kind of writer you are, but I can tell you what made reading this worthwhile: the unique comparison between Romeo and Juliet and Superman and Lois. I like how you added a "nerdy" approach to an otherwise cliche topic. Thanks for sharing.

This piece wove together different eras and fads that wouldn't normally connect into a poem that was easily worth the read, and so I had to read again! The title did that job perfectly as well. Two different beings from two opposing walks of life, to meet at the metaphorical equator and make sense of everything in between-- I really enjoyed this. Great work!

No problem! I enjoyed it. :)
This is a very interesting take on the Superman/Lois Lane relationship. I really like the part about "Morse code" heartbeats. I'd say the captivating imagery is what made reading this worthwhile. Nice work!

Thank you very much!
To be honest, thats was just about the most intresting poem I've read. Its very beautiful, I love how you mixed juliet for lois lane and romeo for superman. I also thought it was interesting how they spoke different languages. Your poem was switched around and different from others and that is what makes it interesting. If you ever have a chance, could you please check out my book? Thanks!

Thank you for your review. It means a lot, and I'm glad you like it.
Anyone that tells you "what kind of writer" you are is probably going to be wrong. But if I had to guess, I'd say the experimental weekend honeymoon variety or, if that one doesn't suit you, how about the "I don't know what writing is but if I slap enough words around maybe I'll get lucky" sort? By now you probably thinking "Who is this insufferable idiot and why should I continue reading these trite comments?" Well, I don't know... only you can answer that; just like the rhetorical you posed in the Author's Note. As for the poem, I'm rather OK with words pretending to be people and kissing with intent to disambiguate their respective lexical contexts. It's a musical montage sans the notes and rhythm - easy to dance to - I'll give it a 96.... oh, OK, just cause it's our first date - 100.

Thank you for the review.
Using well known archetypical characters makes the poem easy to relate to and get into. Soon as you say superman or Romeo or Lois Lane you get instant imagery and character profile. The other thing I liked about it was the original touches: Superman talking to Lois in his own language; Translations of their heart's morse code; hard body but soft touch and "under the flame, That is her body." All of it really original and image invoking.
And it's difficult being original when you do love poems.
Good job.
