A Time Ago

A Time Ago

A Poem by CygnusX-I
"

My first socially critical poem.

"
A time ago when glory was about

Seems today as if in drought.

Sweat of one's labor used to be key,

Now excess is as common as tea.

Tranquil settings now disturbed

Leave us lazy and perturbed.

A fisherman's life turns one free,

If one is obliged to pay the fee.

Great Heavens and God Almighty!

Is there truly way to keep life tidy?

I seem to hear a bell, but for whom?

Man says, 'Dear good traveler, don't be gloom,'

'Ask not for whom the bell tolls...'

'...It tolls for thee!'

This piece has a lot of personality; it may be a common sentiment, but the wording and pacing are unique and easy on the eyes. It makes one think about the differences between past and present.

The only criticism I can offer is that the third line from the bottom doesn't match the rhythm of the rest of the poem, and that the ending seems sudden. It does add to the drama, however.
