Strange New World

What will it be like?

 

Firms are closing

From a tiny work mans cafe

To huge conglomerates

Household names from ages past

None are safe

 

Mail order has increased

Mail order firms are taking on new staff

Buying new trucks and vans

Opening new warehouses

Local hubs they call them

 

Walk to work or on your bike

Not public transport

Keeping distance

Wearing masks

Everywhere

 

People working from home

Or! Going in on a rota

Work one week in the office

Work two weeks from home

Or similar

 

What will the new world be like

Will the new mail order customers stay

Or return to the old days

Will there be sufficient work

For everyone?

I like the way you pose this question? All the things you mention about what it would be like are possible, even probable, and, I think that many of them will be a negative for much of the population. Lastly, the masks may be the new “ normal” but I’m hoping Thayer are not. Maybe we should go back the simpler life of the good old days. Very well done!

Thank you Betty Yes now we have been partially freed; so we should see things beginning to take shape
Still places (big stores) closing their doors for good and one or two cutting back on the large stores in favour of 'on-line' sales
We had our second (top up) Vaccination last Friday

That’s great; hubby and I are vaccinated since Feb, so happy; you’re right about small shops closing and restaurants too; I try to buy local to support the small businesses in my town. Stay safe until this hanger-on virus disappears,

You bring up good questions here. The world has tilted on its axis leaving us wondering what to do and what will be next. Suicides are up, anxiety is leaving people sleepless. Only time will tell what the future brings.

We have been isolated from Last Feb. I had an immunity system break down. But none of that made much differencejust down to one of the harbours on good days
We are retired and winter is like that > go out once a weel for shopping, then down to one of the harbours on a fine day
What we did miss was the summer camping trips.
E booked a week away, then they had an outbreak close by
Yes it looks like some firms are not going to reopen the shops or offices

I don't think we will ever get back to what we once thought of as normal.
The internet and texting already had us doing less face to face contact....real contact.
now we are even more segregated from each other.
Maybe it is what many want, who knows?
I am teaching from home...Microsoft Teams....but not the same as being in class with the students.
I want that back. Yes, this poem says it all.

Yes I know about face to face teaching > I have a few "What students say" type,in posts on here, I was teaching 17yo up-wards - Industrial Instrumentation - technical stuff

It is a strange new world.. something I'm almost getting used to; but still uncomfortable with the virus hanging around...my kids and grand kids are working from home and have been for months. This is certainly relevant and well written. Thanks for sharing.

One recent TV program sugested that the larger stores would have highstreet stores acting amost as a catalogue. where you could see and feel the items - then order mail delivery

How clearly you state the case for not what has happened but what we do to help out OUR future. People are running scared and desperate, so many battling rules, disobeying guide lines because they think they know better than experts.. and I do mean the experts. Who knows what the future holds.. it's what is happening now that we can make or break - yes?

We were second and third on their list
I was clear that no one had thought about people turning up in a wheelchair > pity she wasn't on her electric scooter > that would have been a bigger problem for getting into an out of the building

Mind at each stage of the process they had an admin pr=erson with a PC entering the records onto our GP's records

Guess that was logical and worthwhile for the staff.. but surely logic involves making things practical, safe and comfortable for those visiting for a very important and specific reason. Makes me cringe at the lack of foresight. Hope things went well for the exit.. and since.. Take care. Keep safe, please.

Think it was all done in a rush
They had spent the weekend setting everything up and vaccinating all the staff working there
It would not be until thy got the 'older and more infirm' customers that the inevitable problems turned up

One son now works from home and it is likely that will become somewhat of a norm, other son still goes to his regular location
Mail order has increased tremendously here and many businesses are suffering
We are relatively Covid free on our island but over the New Year, thoughtless people partied and the number has increased
A dangerous but interesting time
