November

07 August 2018

14:16

Afternoon Driving home from hospital high on the hill

Grass still frosted in sheltered spot

Irish Sea and Solway Firth

Shimmering silver blue

Reflecting the clear autumn sky

Distant Dumfries and Galway hills

Dark blue grey fading in the distant horizon

Twenty - Thirty miles away  to a misty shadow

Over head three squadrons of geese

In Vee formations

Changing leaders the front one slides back to find a  gap further back

Like racing cyclists in the peleton

Ravenglass; Duddon Bay; Deeside?

Always going south

Eventually reaching Africa

For winter sun

Further on the Lake District Fells

Sprinkled with icing dust

Grasmor like a huge

Christmas pud

Will the icing cover taste of  Rum?

Doubt

Skiddaw

Cloud leaving a pristine white cover

Sky of light blue with distant

Faint cloud

Wind from the north

Gentle but cold

Home soon to a warm house and drink

This is a heartwarming poem. I fully agree with the sentiment in this poem, 'there's no place like home'. What really catches the imagination in this poem are the references to different locations in Ireland but also a reference to Africa. That simile about likening Grasmor to a Christmas pud was especially interesting. The poetry moves along smoothly and somewhat quickly without the use of rhyming.

The drive home from a hospital. And you take in the scenery in a different way. Attentive to but numb to the details. And your destination, home, is where you will find the comfort and warmth you need. Great write.

I think what I love most about this poem, apart from the breathtaking beauty of the landscape being described and the very careful attention to detail in the description, is the human development. The narration goes from hospital to widescreen panorama shot, to an upward look at the workings of geese, to comfort and home. Whimsical just because, or escapist in reaction to news from the hospital? We may never know. :):)

Either way, a description with bones worthy of Wordsworth in my book.

I do understand this poem. November does promise colder day and a surprise snow day. I enjoyed your description. Here in Michigan, rainy and cold. Thank you Wild Rose for sharing the amazing poetry.
