Do You Remember: Harvest Time; Reaping the corn

Do You Remember: Harvest Time; Reaping the corn

A Chapter by Wild Rose

                                                        The Reaper

Morning milking over

Nourishing breakfast was eaten

Jobs to do in the dairy

Full churns down to the gate

Tractors are in the yard

Check the oil

Fill the fuel

Prepared for a long hard day

Reaper from its shed

Clean and oil

Tying band threaded through

Spare bobbins three in the box

Sun is up

The corn is drying

Within the hour the man

Couple reaper to the tractor

Off we go down the lane

First tractor with a flat trailer

Men one with scythe

Tools and equipment for the day

Clear the thorns

To make away

Reaper brought to the front

Of it sets to start the day

Flails hold corn for the cutter

Corn in sheafs

Are spat out

To lay flat upon the ground

Men follow on foot

Pick two sheafs

Stand the in six to make a stook

Like small tents or houses look

Round and round the field they work

No time for rest - No shirk

Till at last the field is done

All that's left few stooks to build

Now a swig from the cold tea

From the lemonade bottle

Mop your brow

On the way to the next field

Becuz you have a writing style that is straightforward, even stark, I find myself chafing a little bit, wanting to suggest that you add some warmth & personality to your characters. You tell of the basic steps, the mechanics of each story, but you don't infuse a scene with any feeling, it seems to me. But then again, I've tried to offer ideas to you & I've found that your writing style is pretty much baked in. So I won't try to change you, just letting you know how I honestly respond to your writing. This series on the farming life is better suited to your stark writing style than anything else I've read from you so far. Farming life IS stark, so your style works well for these stories in poems . . . great inclusion of many interesting details (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
