Harvest

Harvest

A Poem by Wild Rose

Mint

Growing strong

Too fast to use freshly picked

Dry it so the book says

Past from Great Granny

To her daughter

Mum to daughter down the line

The thick

Cookery and Household Management

Is her reference book

From Candle making to

A full Christmas Dinner

Cut on a warm dry summers day

Hung in bunches

In the garden shed

Amongst the tools

Mower strimmer spade and rake

Trays and pots

Paint and gardening bits and bobs

Left for days until the leaves wither

The days turn wet

Now move the bunches to a drier place

Put thin in an open tray, or

Cardboard box

Finally dry in a warming oven

And again as it cools

Strip the dry leaves from the stalks

Picking out the sharp woody leaf stems

Crunch the leaves

Place in an air tight box

For winter use

I love herbs and have my own herb garden. Not so much mint this year, but the lemon balm and rosemary have completely taken over. I have never dried any of the herbs. I will have to try. I enjoyed your poem about Granny's Cookery and Household Management book. Somewhere I have an old Mrs Beeton's cookery book. There is something really satisfying about passing recipes and tips down the line to the younger generation. Thank you Wild Rose. Have a lovely day and I liked your minty picture as well.

Sometimes your writing can feel a little dry & technical . . . not a bad thing, but it's also fun to see you write like this, which has quite a bit more warmth & imagery, making it feel more poetic than some of yours do. I absolutely LOVE the name of the manual & the sampling of it's contents. That is a true relic from the past which makes me laugh becuz nobody does any of that stuff anymore. But I grew up on a farm, so I remember much of it & I love the way you present it, very original & detailed (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Mint! My brother's garden was blessed with mints this year....I never knew mint can be produced so easily at house yard...but brother surprised me!
All the cold juices are having a great companion as mint this summer season...
I love this preservation process which is expressed through poetry so beautifully!
Thanks for sharing :)
