The relay race

The relay race

A Poem by Wild Rose

They were preparing to line up for the relay

Four runners; one hundred meters each

Pass the message (baton) on to the next

Must be in the marked out area

It was for the county championships

The captain went to the draw for the lane

The team from Hull was next on the right

The tall one on the left its her I want next to

Last year she hit our girl made her drop the baton

She's done it before to others

If I am next

I know how to take her

She runs out of her line

Only changes her hand

After she has hit you

I will be ready and keep clear

"On your Marks" the starter said

They walked forwards

"Get set"

BANG went the gun

All away clear

First exchange over

Out turn next

Our girl is in front

We get our baton changed

Hull is alongside

She moves to the left

Running on the lane line

Her baton in in her left

Mine in the right

Her arm is across my lane

With my baton I hit her hard

Then again and again

As my arms swung

She drops her baton

They are out of the race

We take first place

There's been a complaint

Their girl dropped the baton

She was deliberately hit

I go to the enquiry

Putting on my track suit

My GB team one

With the coaches badge

She was running out of line

Her arms across my lane

The rules are clear

Its my job to know

You have to run in lane

Not interfere with others

I cannot help it

If she can't run straight

It was unfortunate

Her arms tangled with mine

And I came off best

This time

She has done that every year

For the past three

This time she met me

I was ready and knew what to expect

I am on the GB international team

Also a national coach

Run in other countries

This is the only place

Where people are allowed

To run out of lane

Where are the stewards

On the change over box

To see that they keep within lane

And change within the lines

This complaint should have been seen

Has an infringement by her

An never got to an enquiry

Now I trust

You will dismiss the complaint

Compliant dismissed

Nicely done. You cannot argue with reason and rules. Sometimes lines are crossed. They are there for a reason. On the track, on the road and personal boundaries. They keep us safe and we guard our space. This is what I get from your story. You tell a story well.
