Chaeted Hearts

Chaeted Hearts

A Story by Crystal
"

This is a story I wrote for someone else. It's a romance about two kid's in high school. It's kind of sappy but I wrote what they told me to write about. I think it's good considering I don't write romance.

"

Riku looked up at the sky in anticipation, the falling leaves and swirling wind could not still the beat of his heart, as he waited in a local park. It was a cold September morning and Riku was waiting for the brightest light in his life: Jessica. They had met in the middle of the hallway in their high school. Riku remembered it fondly, Jessica had been trying to get a drink from the water fountain after gym, but it wasn’t working. He offered to help turn the knob for her but when he did water splashed all over her face. She was shocked but then began to laugh like no one had ever laughed before. A big sound rolled out of her tiny body like a spring, echoing across the hallway. Tears were streaming down her face onto her gym uniform. She laughed so hard that Riku began to laugh along with her. Till this very day Riku could remember that wondrous smile she had on her face while she laughed. Drifting away from his reminiscing, he looked around to see the smile that he longed for, Jessica was coming toward him from his left.
She was wearing a jean jacket, a red dress underneath, and a red scarf tightly wound around her neck. The breeze blew her auburn hair around her face as she walked into Riku’s arms. Riku smiled and held her tightly but the beating of his heart never slowed. Despite the fact the Jessica was with him now he felt worry creeping up inside him. Lately Jessica had been distant form, like she was hiding a secret. He had caught her texting someone and when Riku would ask her about it she would just say it was something “private” and leave it at that. The thought that Jessica might be cheating flooded into his mind as her phone began to ring.
“Oh!” Jessica said in mild surprise.
“I’ll get this. It’ll only be a minute.” she continued. She turned around to reach into one of her jacket’s pockets to retrieve her cell phone. After saying hello to whomever was calling, she began to walk towards a tree for more privacy. Riku waited anxiously until Jessica returned with a slight smile on her face.
“Who was that?” he asked her.
“ No one special. Let’s get going anyhow.” she replied
“Well whoever it was they sure made you happy.” he stated looking at her closely to gauge her reaction.
“I’m happy because I’m with you.” she replied taking  Riku’s arm and leading him slowly out of the park. They walked together and embraced the city hand in hand. Riku planned on taking Jessica out to lunch at authentic 50’s diner. Jessica loved everything about the 50’s.
“So were are you taking me?” Jessica asked playfully.
“ You’ll see. All I can tell you is that you’ll absolutely love it.” Riku tempted.
“As much as I love you?”
    “Close but hopefully not more.”
“Sounds good.” Jessica replied as they rounded a corner. The city was teeming with life as people enjoyed their weekends off. Young people ran around in flocks, only stopping to occasionally gawk at a prize in a store window. Riku and Jessica stopped in front of shop to admire it’s collection of costume jewelry. Jessica was particularly intrigued by a hairpin that looked like it came from the 1800s. Riku could tell from the gleam in her eye that he would have to get her it for their anniversary tomorrow.
Getting their fill of costume jewelry they continued down the street until they found their destination. The diner they were in front of was creatively given the name of Frank’s Diner. The two of them entered and found a both in a corner near the window. Jessica took of her jacket and she and Riku started looking around the diner. It was white and red. The booths were red and the floor was checkered white and red. The only exception were the waitresses who wore salmon pink short dresses with white aprons and white roller-skates. Jessica was looking around the diner in awe. By the time one of the waitresses skated over to were she and Riku were sitting she was practically grinning at Riku from ear to ear.
“Welcome to Frank’s Diner! What can I get you two lovebirds?” the waitress asked pleasantly. She had strawberry blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes.
“ Are there any specials?” Riku asked.
“We have a special on the club sandwich with fries and a coke, as well as a special on chili dogs with fries and a coke.”
“I’ll have the chilidog. Jessica what will you have?”
    “I’ll have the club sandwich.”
“Okay then I’ll be right back with your order.” the waitress replied and she skated over around the back to wear the kitchen was.
“I can’t believe you found an authentic 50s diner. Your just full of surprises.” Jessica gushed.
“Well I aim to please and I just adore your facial expressions .” Riku smirked. Jessica playfully smacked Riku with her menu. Riku continued to smile, warming Jessica’s heart. As Riku looked into Jessica’s eyes he couldn’t believe that he had doubted her before.
“It’s kind of hot in here.” Riku stated while taking off his jacket, ”How come you won’t take off your scarf?”
“Oh I just don’t feel like it.” Jessica replied looking away, “Besides it adds to my outfit.”
“Oh come on you look great not matter what. I’ll even take it off for you.” Riku replied, and he reached over to Jessica and quickly took off her scarf to reveal a slight mark on her neck.
“Riku!” Jessica started. Just then their waitress arrived with their food. She set it down in front of them and wished for them enjoy their meal.
    “What is that?” Riku demanded.
“It’s just a bruise Riku. What’s with the 21 questions.”
“I just asked you one question.”
“Okay then it was answered. Now can we eat?”
Riku was still upset when Jessica’s phone rang. She picked it up and began listening to whoever had called her. She began to smile as she was listening then eventually told the person she would be there.
“I’m sorry but I have to leave early Riku. It’s really important.” she said. She put on her jacket and scarf and was out of the booth when Riku grabbed her hand.
“Where are you going and who keeps calling you!?” Riku demanded.
“I’m going to meet someone, it’s very important.”
“So important that your willing to leave right in the middle of our date?”
“Yes. I can’t meet them at any other time.” and with that Jessica yanked her arm out of Riku’s and walked out of the diner. Riku quickly put some money down on the table and followed her. Jessica had rounded the corner but Riku grabbed her and forcefully kissed her. She struggled to pull away and when she finally did she began to yell at him.
“What is your problem!” she demanded
“What’s my problem!? I could ask the same of you!”
“I just really needed to leave can’t you understand that!?
“No! You’ve been too distant lately and frankly I’m starting to think your cheating.”
“What?” Jessica whispered and a tear began to stream down her face, “How could you think that?”
“Don’t cry but with the way you’ve been acting and that hicky on your neck…”
“Hicky! This is a bruise from playing tennis. I hit myself with my own racket.”
    “Oh.” Riku whispered.
“And if you wanted to know why I’ve been distant it’s been because I’ve been planning a surprise for you to celebrate our anniversary tomorrow. That’s why your brother called earlier twice to help me get  something special for you.”
“Oh. Jessica I’m so sorry I accused you of cheating. Can you forgive me?” Riku begged grabbing her hand and squeezing it in his.
“I don’t know. You were pretty mean.” Jessica teased. Riku gave her a pleading look. Jessica took his other hand and smiled gently.
“I forgive you. Let’s just go home now.” Jessica whispered. They walked down the street, Riku stopped by the jewelry store they say earlier and bought the hairpin for Jessica, then they went back to the park where they had met earlier. They kissed and went their separate ways to their homes. While they kissed Riku realized he had an amazing girlfriend and that he should never have any reason to doubt her ever again and in that moment his heart was finally stilled.
