Maid Marian 2000

Marian began life as the Queen of the May

 the young woman 

chosen at May festivities 

to personify the end of winter the return of fertility to the earth

Once more after the long barren months of the year a maypole was set up 

there was ritual dancing around it 

The May Games had two presiding spirits Robin 

the rough-and-ready huntsman precursor of Robin 

Sherif of Nottingham

and the white-clad spirit Queen of fertility and the anarchic excess of springtime 

A May Queen was elected each year from among the villagers

crowned with blossom and garlanded with flowers

as a personification of the strength and abundance of the earth

Maid Marian was chosen 

There is no doubt that Marian is a courageous presence 

In one version she venture into the band of 

Merry Men in Nottingham forrest disguised in male clothes 

she challenges Robin hood who steals fr the Rich to give to the poor

himself disguised they duel with swords 

They drew out their swords

the sword flew out of Maid Marian hand

she struggles to get the sword

that is when she is captured by Robin Hood

the merry men who found the fight laughed 

to find Robin scraping on the ground 

Friar-tuc-the-monk appears and shouts 

(Stop) Marian is wounded very sore  (Stop)

the blood ran fr the scratches on Robins face

Note that it is Robin who concedes the contest

Far from being embarrassed when they discover each others true identities

he laughs welcomes her with open arms 

she cannot help laughing with the outlaws
