Utterance

Utterance

A Poem by Al R. Arce

Where have the smirks all gone?
No longer can we feel or see
A fading skill the use of wits
The awareness to talk without a word
The consciousness of inferring
That in order to screed
You don't need the use of lexicons.

dEz old ppl alwys accusing me
Of tellin dem things I nevr sA
f i dun sA it thN i dun sA!
I don't git wot dey c
wen i txt i cn relate
I cn share w my fRnds
bt wen i TLK it's a bad fEl

Eyebrows and lips
Pulled, rolled or tightened
In joy, disgust or contempt
Universal in nature to see
Emoticons futile attempt
To save body language in the web
As if spontaneity could be copied.

What future is there for our children?
Where we avoid companionship
For fear of despondency
When our emotional intellect
Will be no greater than a dolphin's
So talk, share and put away those keys
Experience what is to contemplate

Author's Note

Al R. Arce
I wrote this because I worry about our children's inability to communicate. Texting, tweeting and emailing have taken body language out of the equation. Big mistake as over 80% of what we say we say it with our bodies. BTW futile attempt at writing poetry in text language!
