CHAPTER THREE

Once I saw him, my legs turned to jello – refusing to move while feeling as if I could fall to the ground in one instant. He didn’t even look like himself. Nate was a rather small guy with naturally dark skin and hair. Normally, he looked as if the smallest of things could’ve torn him in two while still he had this look upon him that said that you didn’t want to mess with him – well, at least for most people. Tonight though, he looked as if he had been torn in two. There were tubes running into machines everywhere and one of his legs was elevated by a pillow.
After a few minutes, I somehow composed myself to walk the few steps to his bedside. Once I was close enough, I extended my hand to gently rest on top of his. Even this slight movement seemed to hurt him in my eyes. Slowly, I took a few more steps towards him and sat down in the chair by the bed.
“I knew you’d come, Becca,” Nate spoke in a weak voice. He was the only one that called her Becca.
“Of course…” I managed to say, trying my hardest not to give into the tears that wanted to stream down my cheeks.
For a few moments, we just sat there. As we did, I began to notice the bruises that covered his face and arms. I had to admit that it was worse than I had imagined. Still, I did not know what had happened to him. Right now though, that didn’t matter for all I wanted now was to be with him and know that he was okay.
As we sat there in silence, I suddenly felt his hand squeeze mine just slightly. Quickly, I looked down at our hands and smiled. That was something that we always did to each other; simply one of those cute couple things. I then looked back up at him just in time to see his hand reach up to wipe a tear that had managed to make its way down my cheek.
“I’ll be okay,” he spoke in a quiet voice.
“I’m holding you to that,” I told him, smiling slightly but still trying not to cry even more now that he’d wiped away one tear.
Slowly, he removed his hand from my face and reached into his pocket. As he pulled his hand back up, I could tell that he was clutching something in a small black box. It was then that I suddenly remembered that it was my birthday.
“Happy birthday, baby,” he told him as he gently placed the box in my hand.
Shocked, I sat there dumbfounded for a few moments. Never letting go of his hand, I opened up the box with only one hand. As the box slowly opened, I could already see the small object shining. Seeing it, I looked down to see that bracelet that was on my wrist from what seemed like a lifetime ago yet I knew that it had only been about a half an hour.
Looking down at the ring in the box, I knew that my eyes had to be shining just like the ring was.  It was simply beautiful. [Inset detail of ring here]
It was then that the tears began to flow from my eyes. Everything about this entire night was unique. I was left guessing every minute, unaware of what was to happen next and unsure if I wanted it to happen.
“Nate… Thank you so much…” I managed to say as I continued to look down at the ring that was still in the box.
Slowly, Nate let go of my hand to take the ring from the box. He then placed it gently on the ring finger of my right hand. After putting the ring on my finger, he reached up to wipe away a few of my tears. Also, he leaned over slightly to kiss away a few of the tears from my cheeks.
As I stopped crying, I looked down at the beautiful ring on my finger. Then I gently wrapped my hands around the back of his neck and moved closer to him.   Forgetting completely about where we were or what had just happened, I then began kissing his lips more passionately than I ever had before. For the second time, I was so lucky as to still have him in my life. It’s those moments that I will never forget for as long as I live…
