So Very Long Ago...it seemsA Poem by Cree NationsThis was first drafted in 1966, and then completed in 1973.Long ago was a time of hopes and dreams A time for young hearts to take bloom How could they know that love had come too soon. He made no promises and she asked for none. That would be foolish it seemed. This world they lived in would tear them apart Futures were set in motion Long before they were even born. How could they know? That fate had been set for them…written in stone. Young and foolish They fell in love, full of innocence and glee How could they know it was never meant to be? The silence of their song was strong. How could they have known the tune of their hearts? When two souls touched ne’r to part? Souls cannot mate at the direction of the heart It happens long before a word is spoken The love they feel but a token. Neither would know, or give it thought Time was precious, a war to be fought. Days grew dark and nights darker still She watched him leave, hard pain to feel In silence soft love words poured out of her heart. Yet no sound from her lips did he hear. Only a smile and a few of her tears. Time did pass, and time went on And silence was their soul’s song. Neither had known, or thought to know Those souls had joined though paths would take them a
world apart. Along with him he took her heart. Shadows of silver, bars of brass… A lonely soul with no looking glass. There is no death for a soul, did you know? A life will go on with other loves and many new songs But the memory is there, a secret of the heart to
show. The soul does remember where it belongs. A soul will choose, a soul will mate. Kisses shared and remembered by both, Why and how could they be wrong? She wrote of a moonlit night in a Chevy car Filled with the brightness of a silver star. Happiness it seemed was such a simple thing… a girl alone with a boy talked of many dream. © 2012 Cree Nations |
