My Twin is in Heaven

Hello sweet girl, thoughts of you are filling my mind,

And words are really hard to find.

I cannot imagine the pain you’ve felt -

But I marvel at the way you’ve dealt.

You amaze me by the strength you’ve shown

And how the brightness of your light has grown.

I don’t know how you’ve made it with such grace.

I’m sure at times your heart is full of pain

And that your nights are a lonely place.

Yes it’s true that life for us is not the same.

The strength of you is amazing to see

But in your grief you’ve strengthened me.

Yes it’s true your heart did break

But she left you hers to mend the ache.

I know at times it’s hard to cope

But know this Tanner Joy

Carson’s legacy is your living Hope.

Amazing poem, I can just imagine the story. Out of curiosity when it says,"Yes it's true your heart did break. But she left you her's to mend the break." Is it literal or is it a metaphor? Or both? I don't think I should say," I enjoyed this poem." It is sad. Sad poems don't make you joyful. But I think its alright if I say I like it because I truly do. It's wonderful how you chose the words to make it sound so smooth. Thank you for sharing such a poem.

Nikki you are right there is a story, a heartbreaking yet bittersweet story behind this poem. This is the third poem in a trilogy. The first is "The Beauty of our Hope", the second is "Sweet Hope" and the third is this one "My Twin is in Heaven". Today is the birthday of my twin nieces. Carson Hope Reilly and Tanner Joy Reilly. On January 13th 2012 they were in a car wreck. Their Mother was driving. Carson died as a result of her injuries. They were 13 at the time. The first poem I wrote was to the mother whose name is Kimberly. Kim named her daughters (3 of them) Addison Faith Reilly, Carson Hope Reilly and Tanner Joy Reilly. So in the first poem the ending phrase is the beginning of a very painful journey for them. Addison is now a mother of a wonderful baby boy. Tanner is struggling to live her life without her twin. Hence the phrase Yes it's true your heart did break, but she left you her's to mend the ache. They were extremely close even for twins. They were 3 months premature and Carson almost didn't make it. The doctors and nurses said that the constant contact from Tanner pulled her through. The first two poems were more to Kim and Carson but this last one I wrote for Tanner. It really is such a heart wrenching story. I will be sure to read the other poems as well to fully understand what you say, though in the end I might still not be able to. I have a saying I say to those of my family though mainly it is for me. I say,"It is brave to cry, but it is even braver to smile." I think you have it down, I think your "smile" is that you were able to write this poem and come all the way with it. You have my respects. Once again, thank you for sharing this poem.
