Chapter 11A Chapter by Kyline Freed
Andrew makes me and Kalek wait a day before he allows us to go. I don’t understand why but all well, I don’t really care anyways, it gave me time to get things together without rushing.
I hear a knock on my door. I open it to see Kalek standing there, his bag on his back with only one strap on his shoulder. (We could only pack one bag for traveling reasons.) “Hey,” he says leaning against the doorframe. “Your brother is wantin’ to talk to you.” Kalek walks into my room and sits on my bed, Aiden walks in a few moments later. “Hi,” he says doing the same little wave thing that Andrew does and stands where Kalek just was. “We’re about ready to go.” Without words I stand and grab my bag, they take the sign and follow me out the door. We walk down the stairs into the sunroom where I had just found out Aiden was still alive in yesterday. “You guys ready?” Eli asks watching us stride into the room. “I believe so,” I say moving my bag onto my shoulders so I can cross my arms across my chest. I look at Kalek who is standing beside me out of the corner of my eye, I swear I see regret or worry flash over his face but it’s gone as soon as I see it so I can’t be sure if it really was there. Eli swiftly turns around and makes his way to the back of the room, not pausing to see if we are following. He stops when he is face to face with the drywall, reaching into his pocket he pulls out a bottle of what looks like purple ink, on the bottom of the bottle is a point with a little bit of the ink or whatever it is pooling out of it. Pushing the tip to the wall he begins to draw four enormous overlapping circles in a box shape about the size of himself, the ink begins to drip down the wall in small, jagged lines. Slowly the wall area where he had drawn the circles turns into almost water looking, it’s rippling and shows a slight reflection of the four of us standing there. “What’s that?” Kalek motions towards the wall where the water looking stuff just showed up. It ripples in and out splashing us a little. “Water,” I mutter messing with the area of my clothing that was hit by it. “I realize that but what is it?” Eli looks at me and smiles when I lift my head up a little to see if anyone is going to answer Kalek. “It’s the portal. One circle for each person. Every time one person goes through one circle disappears which means the smallest of us all needs to go last,” he pauses and nods in my direction. “That’d be you Krista. “Aiden, you should go first.” He nods and makes his way to the portal, he looks at us and then steps into it. A moment later he’s out of sight. “I’m going to go ahead and go through because you and me are about the same size.” He directs this to Kalek. Once Eli turns around to go through Kalek silently grabs my hand squeezes it and lets it go and makes his way to the portal, he looks back at me does the wave thing that Andrew did at the hospital and is gone. Then I step through.
