MagicA Story by SusanneA story we'd all like to be true....Magic
Julia stood in her kitchen and surveyed the scene before her eyes. Every surface was covered, every inch taken up by something or other. There was a blender, still bearing the stains of the fruit smoothie her daughter made earlier for breakfast. Toast crumbs littered in a circle around the kettle, which was in turn covered in fat from the bacon and eggs her son Tommy had cooked for himself before going off to college. Newspapers, magazines, cereal packets, milk, tea bags, frying pan leaning guiltily against the saucepan, which in turn looked at the sticky mess in the bottom of the small milk pan which looked suspiciously like porridge residue. Her family were a messy lot. She had enjoyed a rare and well deserved lie-in, but it looked as though her work was cut out for the rest of the morning, cleaning this little lot up. Or maybe not. Julia glanced warily around, even though she knew she was on her own. Raising her right hand, she swirled it around in the air a couple of times, feeling the inevitable shiver down her spine of what she was about to do and spoke loudly; “Clean and bright, no mess in sight, quick and light, let’s do it right.” Julia spoke as if to a group of children. “Everything clean and in its place, quickly please.” The kitchen came alive. Saucepans rattled and water ran into the bowl. Washing up liquid squeezed and scourers jumped up excitedly. Tidying began, cupboards banged and dishcloths washed. Tea towels jumped to attention and began drying. Plates, dishes and saucepans gleamed. The kitchen was a frenzy of activity. Tiny trails of glitter arched in the air, dispersing as each new job was completed. Within a few minutes the kitchen was as clean as a new pin. Julia folded her arms; satisfied. Glancing down at the floor, she noticed a coffee stain. Frowning, she clapped her hands twice and shouted, “Coffee stain too please, don’t do half a job!” Quivering, the mop and bucket jumped, as if bitten and quickly wiped up the offending stain. Jumping back into the bucket the mop tossed its head and became still again. Job done. Julia adored magic. © 2014 SusanneAuthor's Note
