I Cannot Stop for Death

I Cannot Stop for Death

A Poem by G. Anderson

Because I could not stop for death,
I kept fighting the hurt.
The threnity.
The world.

The cold hand of fear gripped me
as I slowly watched you slip away,
into the past and future,
into the yesterday.

If I died to you tomorrow,
would you come to me today?
Would you dry my tears,
or cast me away?

I'd throw myself to fate,
between our hearts the cleft.
I've no reason to live,
but I cannot stop for death.

My feet still wear the grass,
for suicide is a coward's destiny.
I trudge along this angry path,
and can't imagine you without me.

The trees will grow
and sun burn red.
Things won't change
once I've left.

Before I've bid the final farewell,
I've one last request.
Remember me and mine, for I
cannot stop for death.
