Adulteress

Adulteress

A Poem by Courtney

White roses are sent to the adulteress

Who spends each night in strangers’ arms.

By day she's cut down in social regress

Yet nightfall's mask reveals her charm

Which outshines the bruises left on her soul.

Inky shadows cling to her frame

As her double lives fight for full control;

One of innocence, one of shame.

Two entities erupt from her body

And she falls back onto the floor,

Bearing witness to her own undoing.

They will not be caged anymore.

They each take form and their horns interlock

And for a moment, time stands still.

Footsteps echo as she guardedly walks

To a mirror against the wall.

The shameful entity pins the other

And her eyes fall, remembering

That her only solace is night's cover.

She is free but still in hiding.

Her gaze shifts. The roses, gleaming pure white,

Begin to seep with crimson blood.

Only then does she acknowledge the knife

Clenched in her hand above the flood

And lodged deep inside her still beating chest.

Locking eyes with the fallen beast,

She lays her head upon its wounded breast

And they, together, cease to breathe.
