Too Thin to FunctionA Chapter by Smith Courtney
With oppurtunity comes great responsibility. Jane was quickly realizing what this meant. After "realizing" that she was the "problem" here, she decided on something. She would sculpt herself into the perfect barbie doll. It would benefit everyone, she thought. She would be making everyone happy and she would be staying positive and strong for her father. It was the "perfect plan" Quote, unquote, she was desperate. She stopped eating. Obsessing over every figure that read on the scale. She weighed herself at least 5 times an hour. Jane was 10 years old. She shouldn't have to worry about these things.. why was she? To escape from her problems she had told herself.. She was convinced this would fix everything and she didn't know how or when, but it would. She began to feel so low, she couldn't feel anything at all. She bagan "eating dinnner in her room" , which her father brushed off, thinking she was just upset about her mother, but Jane would scrape every item on her plate into her trashcan and lay in bed and cry. Her bed was her best friend that she turned to when she didn't have dance practice. That's what pushed her through for the most part.. dance.. Jane became disgusted with herself. Thinking she was overweight at 60 pounds. She would compare herself to every other girl she'd ever met in her life. She didn't match up to any of them, she felt. They were all better, in some distinct way, that were so perfect. Jane was infatuated with the idea of being a perfect barbie. Sculpting herself into the perfect palette took her mind off of life. Off of her mom, her dad, her brother, school.. But it didn't for long.. it became serious.. she would layer clothes so you couldn't see her ribcage through her own shirt. She became too thin to function. She was hiding under her chunky sweaters and bulky winter jackets.. She was running. Away of everything. She was scared of everything.
