Into the hell fireA Chapter by CourtdanksI was looking at Brenan for one last time, the two of us
perched upon our steeds, if only I could save them from this inevitable fate,
but without them we would not complete this immense task. I looked back at the half moon shaped mass of people who
were waiting for my command, the silence was almost deafening with nothing but
the flapping of clothing and the scratch of hooves on the dry dirt. It was an
incredible sight but a disturbing one, looking out at what lay ahead; the plain
was flat with nothing but the scraggly wood plants that grew from the burnt
landscape, chard at each end. The sun was setting and that mixed with the evil
that was on the horizon gave the sky an awesome orange glow. They were sure to
have seen our silhouettes on the horizon but that did not matter now they
already knew we were coming, always had. It was silly to think it could end any
other way. “It has been an honour Reese.” Brenan exclaimed. “And I you,
I hope you find your peace brother.” I said, I tried not to let my voice tremble
since I am about to lead these men to their inevitable deaths. “Now let’s rid this hell fire from this forsaken world!”
Shouted Brenan as we simultaneously turned to face what lay on the horizon.
“Gods speed!” I ordered as we started into a canter then to a gallop, getting
faster, I felt the wind on through my hair for the last time. I will give my life for this land! The
closer we got the brighter our surroundings became, an orange cloud filled with
dust and debris whipped around us, but we did not falter. The world turned
brighter and with a flash I was thrown to the ground. I was blinded and my ears were ringing, I rose to my feet
swaying as my vision came back cloudy at first then I could finally see, a
demon was charging toward me. I raised my sword and struck him down without
hesitation. But then came another and another, the second fell easy but the
third had me parrying left right and all around trying to keep its blade away
from me. I stumbled, within an instant the creature jumped back lifting its
blade above its head. I caught the shimmer that sparkled of its green tinted blade,
after the split second pause it sliced through the air with all strength behind
it. Just in time I threw my blade in an upward motion deflecting the blow; the
blades screeched as they scraped each other. For a split-second I was into
those deathly, soulless, black eyes. With that I spun my blade round toward the
creature and pierced its foul heart, it let out a deathly screech as it dropped
to the ground, collapsing with a thump, its black blood oozing from its wound.
I soon realized I had not escaped unscathed, a four-inch incision had been made
on the upper half of my left arm. It burned. Whatever they dressed their
weapons with it was acid which slowly burned the skin, though it would not be
lethal in this case it burned none the less. I gently let some droplets of
water on my wound to try and sooth it but it didn’t help much. Suddenly there was another flash and I was surrounded by
fog, “Reese.” It came from behind me, I quickly turned to find Katherine standing
behind me, I paused as she rested a hand on my face. How I missed her soft
touch. “Come with me, you can end this.” She spoke softly. “No!” I cried
“You’re not real, you cannot be real!” Suddenly she was gone and another flash
burned through my eyes. I found myself in a hall, I could see my reflection in
the marble floor. Various statues covered the grey stone walls and the scarcely
decorated sealing hung high above me, then it came to me, I’m in the castle! The hall seemed endless, nothing but fog at its
farthest end, which was a far as I could see. I spun about to find a large wooden door that was held in
place by giant iron hinges, devilish artwork decorated its size. I entered the
room where stood the enemy its self. “Aaaah Reese… So, nice to finally meet you…
To whom do I owe the pleasure.” An evil smile converged on its face and a gross
laugh ripped through my ears. © 2017 CourtdanksAuthor's Note
