Thoughts While Listening to American Pie

Thoughts While Listening to American Pie

A Poem by Kelly A. Brown

There seems to be a perpetual

anguish in

America.

We have the houses

rather, 70% of us have the houses.

We have the food, rather

90% of us have the food.

We have the freedom

rather 95% of us have

the freedom.

That's more than most have.

Many have nothing, rather

40% have nothing.

We all want to look like

Carmen Electra and those

who don't are undoubtedly

more intelligent,

but probably don't get into

the fine schools and if they do

they do and they do and

they do

and that's

lovely and how it's supposed to be.

It's supposed to be grand

It's supposed to be a drug

It's supposed to be a fantastical dream

It's supposed to be the last supper

It's supposed to be an earthquake

It's supposed to be King Tut's tomb

But, it's not supposed to be like this.
