Cover Her Ears

Cover Her Ears

A Poem by CJ

Cover Her Ears

The little girl,

Maybe nine or ten,

Sits upon her bed,

Tears streaming down her face,

Listening to their shouting and yells.

Cover her ears!

She shouldn’t have to hear this.

These hurtful words,

Being thrown in the other room,

For one to another.

She is just a child,

Who needs the loving care

Of her two parents.

Except now,

The love is gone from this house.

The yelling stops,

A door is slammed,

An engine roars,

Then vanishes.

All that is left to hear,

Are the cries the child makes.

A tiny knock comes to the door,

And a head pops in.

It is her mom,

Looking just like the girl,

With a crying, tearful face.

She comes to the girl,

And curls up with her on the bed.

They both just cry in silence.

Just six words are spoken,

“I’m sorry, honey. I love you”

That is not right. Even though this is a poem, I feel that even children in the real world that face this shouldn't have to go through with it. It might traumatize their later on life and make it harder to accept new parents when their parents have moved on.

its so sad, but at least she still has her mommy... a girl would need that, even if its a broken mom.

i used to cry when my parents fought, but when you have three older siblings they tell you that you are stupid to cry, so you don't. this was sad, but it was beautiful at the same time!the need to feel love is more than needed in this poem, it's desired! parents never want you to hear them fighting, but after awhile they give up on trying to hide it... you really out us in her shoes and let us experience how she felt and how her mother felt... you continue to amaze me with your power to connect with the reader!

Sad (in a good way. In the poetic way. : ). My family is going through a divorce right now, and this poem re-created those feelings of sadness and separation very well. Keep it up! : )
