The Surface

The Surface

A Poem by Cory James
"

Just something I wrote for a class.

"

On the surface, I am calm and steady

Listening to every word you say,

Subtle like a gentle breeze kissing the ocean waves.

Contemplating its meaning.

Blushing with a nervous smile,

On the surface, I am soft spoken,

I am the rain merging into the ocean,

Inert to exterior stimulation.

The slight drifting of sea matter,

Plastic, wood and other commodities.

On the surface, I am collected, meditative...

But underneath, I am upturned, pulled

Every which way.

Never at ease, never relaxed.

Inflamed by the

Emergence of intolerant, greedy ill-fed domestication.

Beneath the waves- Sunk ships, white, hollow, screaming

Pockets of wreckage rise.

Plastic, wood and other commodities.

But on the surface...

I'm a quiet face in the water,

Smiling with an equivocal demeanor.

I love the sudden change of tone in this poem. How it starts of so gentle and then turns more dangerous with the words. Great write!
