A New Lease on Life

This is an old piece and has been revised several times now.

I was lost.

I was tortured.

I was broken.

Pain filled my veins like venom;

slowly killing me from the inside.

It spread like wild fire, choking

the very life from me.

No hope in sight and I began to

drown in the misery,

but then as I was about to give in and

succumb to the agony; redemption!

A loving hand reached in and pulled me

from the despair. 

I am found.

I am free.

I am whole.

Happiness pierces my soul

allowing me to cleanse the poison.

The fires that raged calm and drift away

allowing for breaths of fresh air.

A new lease on life; free from my

confines of sorrow.

Light envelopes and holds me close

and warms my very soul.

How good it feels to have a sense of serenity

and calm.

Author's Note

I have been through some very painful things in my short life, and this is just from one of those times.

This poem is very well-written. The transition from a dismal place filled with seemingly hopelessness to a new found haven filled with just the opposite is both interesting and true to life. Your descriptions are concrete and the metaphors involving poison and fire are well-thought out. I enjoyed reading this poem. Well done.
