Snapshot in timeA Story by Jennifer GraceA brief creative writing piece about a village dance.Pale yellow petals floated down, and the sound of laughter burst around them like confetti. The sky that could be seen through the overarching trees was a soft, dusky blue, and the lazy afternoon sun caused dappled light to pour through the leaves into the glen, making colours appear brighter and warmer. The young couple twirled around, hand in hand, the girl's white dress rippling out behind her and catching the warm green fronds of the surrounding ferns. Her eyes sparkled as she spun, a cheeky grin spreading across her face. Freckles danced across her nose as she turned her head upwards to try and glimpse the noonday sky through the trees. Her partner followed her gaze, glancing up at the fluttering leaves in the canopy above. The dappled sunlight fell across his face, making his soft brown eyes appear golden. He looked back down at her, a smile beginning to form as he watched her grinning madly with excitement. A fiddle struck up a lively tune, and many other couples grabbed hands and started to dance with a flurry of joyful shrieking and laughter. Soon the glen was filled with twirling figures, the women with their flowing dresses and brightly coloured ribbons, the men with loose top shirt buttons and strong, working hands. © 2020 Jennifer Grace |
