And Then It's Too Late

And Then It's Too Late

A Poem by Anelec L'lehcor H'Tims

I saw her in Macy’s with a pair of Ray-Bans.

She was at the Mac Counter.

She thought that no one noticed.

She came to work with heavy makeup and long sleeves.

She thought no one noticed.

She winced when she ate and shivered when someone touched her.

She thought no one noticed.

When everyone’s attention was diverted, her face fell.

She sobbed when she was alone.

She thought no one noticed.

She wore flats with a limp, and she had a new wig.

She thought no one noticed.

She stopped coming to work. In fact, no one had seen her.

She’d thought no one would notice.

But I did.

When people act strange; when they’re no longer the same, speak now. You may be the only on e noticing.
