Six Degrees of Separation

A Story by Rebecca Moran
"

Short break up story, based on the lyrics of 'Six degrees of separation' by The script.

"
Her head hit the pillow, letting the tears dampen the sheets as her body curled up into a ball, concealing the pain that rushed through her body, making her shake with hurt as she cried. He didn't love her, and she knew that, from the start he made it very goddamn clear...But she was persistent in all the wrong things. Her chest heaved and she turned onto her back, letting the tears stroll down both her cheeks and blur what she could see of the ceiling. Staying silent, She tried to control her breathing, letting herself calm down before finally turning over to see a text from her friend pop on the screen of her phone.

11:43pm: Don't worry, Babe. He wasn't good for you anyway..

She turned her head to the side and pushed the phone off the side of the bed with a groan that got stuck in a sob, making her finally break down into tears and shove her face away into the fabrics of the pillow below. 'Please don't leave..'

First, You think the worst is a broken heart...

She woke the next morning feeling tense and confused, her head spinning from the headache she was about to be graced with. Her body ached from being curled in the most awkward positions, her body cramping for a minute before she pushed herself up and off the bed, wincing when she stepped on her phone which began vibrating beneath her foot. She sighed and held her head as she bent down, retrieving her phone and cancelling the call from her friend. She could feel the roughness in her throat, talking would most likely be a problem for the day. Some of the messages she'd got from her friend popped up on the screen:

2:56am: Are you okay?
3:14am: Please answer your phone, I don't want you to hurt yourself..
3:37am: I know breakups are bad, please you don't have to go through it alone..
4:30am: I don't care about before.
6:45am: Call me...

She swallowed as the memories of the night before crashed back into her memory, making her drop the phone and take a breath. No...She was gonna break down, not now. She was gonna go to school and she was gonna fix this...He didn't mean what he said...Hopefully...

She skipped the shower, washing herself by the sink and throwing her hair up in a bun before pulling on clothes and leaving the house, leaving her phone and skipping breakfast, they weren't important right now... She got to school, almost fifteen minutes late due to her contemplating walk. The teacher scolded her, but she didn't take much notice, too busy looking around the class she longed to see...But it wasn't there...She sat in her seat, shaking her head and thinking he was just late..He'd be in later..He'd still come to see her...

After the class she lifted her stuff, rushing from the room to avoid confrontation, or worse - comfort, from her friend. The bell for second class went but she ignored it and ran to the place him and her went to skip second, without fail, every tuesday. She leaned against the wall and waited...Remembering every kiss and caress they'd shared with eachother on that spot, every naughty secret they held involving this place...But after an hour the memories only brought tears...He wasn't coming and she denied it to herself, but another hour passed and she'd slid down the wall and curled up, a piece of her heart breaking even more as the tears started to flow...'Why doesn't he want me..'

What's gonna kill you is the second part...

The walk home was long and dreary, and when she finally arrived she avoided her uncle, and went straight upstairs and into the shower. She stripped down and stood under the rushing water, staring at the wall for a few minutes, her mind going crazy before she finally dropped her head and a sob ran through her body, making her drop down and cover herself with her knees, the tears being washed away by the hot streams from above. She should have never went after him...Trusted him, wanted him, Loved him...

She cried until she couldn't no more..The tears stopped and she simply sat in the shower till the water became cold and she was forced up and into a towel, her eyes red and her body tired. She shuffled her way to her bed and fell face down, having to readjust herself after a while due to her phone jabbing at her side. She didn't bother getting ready, instead she crawled under the covers, pulling them over her head and pressing the button on her phone. The bright light made her wince and she squinted to read the writing on the front, only blink when she realised it was a text from him.

9:58am: I won't be there.

And third, Is when your world splits down the middle...

After two weeks the pain had subsided. After days of comfort from her friend, and nights of crying in her uncles arms she let herself forget about him, even though he nagged at the back of her mind she learned to ignore it..But it will always be there. She'd started going to her Tuesday lessons, she didn't break her curfew anymore, her grades went up and she used up every single distraction she could. She started to feel happy, even if it wasn't entirely, it was enough.

Her friend came over and they sat on the floor of her room, eating ice cream and doing the project they'd both been assigned too. She'd missed her friend..She almost pushed her a way because of him...He consumed her time, taking it up with kisses and making her squirm. She'd happily skip lessons to be with him even if it mean't trouble, she was drawn to him and away from her friend...But she couldn't let that happen again, now that he's gone her friend is the only thing she has.

And Forth, You're gonna think that your fixed yourself.

After a few days and nights of hard work on a project worth an A grade, they decided to take the night off, be rebellious, get drunk. Go crazy. After school they spent hours getting ready, having to sneak past her uncle and head out into the night. Her friend knew a bar that was in the town, and she knew away they could sneak in, So they went, spirits high. The arrived and her friend told her to wait as she went to check the place out, but in her absence, the other girl froze. He was there, he was here. He was walking into the bar they were about to enter. Her heart became weak as their eyes made contact, his cold and dangerous, hers almost ready to cry as they moved away to see the girl twirled around his arm at the side. He looked to his companion before giving the girl a second glance and moving into the bar, pulling the girl along.

Fifth, You see them out with someone else.

She stepped back and held her chest, getting ready to walk off before she was grabbed by her friend and hauled inside the secret entrance her friend had discovered, and before she knew it, she was surrounded by loud music and dancing people. Her friend mumbled about drinks and moved away as she uncomfortably made her way through the crowd, looking for him but denying that she was. He was at the bar where she expected him to be, a drink in his hand and a cold expression on his face as he watched the crowd, his eyes soon falling on her before he downed the drink and moved away, making her immediately follow after...Even though she doubted he would approve.

She followed him through the crowd, wondering where he could possibly be going, but then she spotted the entrance she came through and her heart stopped, making her blink before she quickened her pace and finally caught his arm. But instead of pulling him back she was pushed back into the wall, not harshly...almost gently. For the first time in weeks she felt his breath on her skin, his body near hers and his eyes on her face. She let out a breath, letting her eyes travel up to meet his...But she'd drawn her expectation too high, she soon realised when she saw the glare gracing his face...He stared at her for a good few seconds, almost as if contemplating before finally shaking his head.

'Don't follow me...'

He grumbled, letting her drop as he left through the back entrance, her eyes filling up as she watched every step he took to get away from her. To leave her there and break her heart. She slid down the wall she was pressed against and obeyed his last wish for her. Not following after him...Letting him go back to the life he'd supposedly hated so much. The mother he despised and the father that left. The education he didn't want and the solitude he'd craved. She stayed on the floor, her tears silent as she wondered where she went wrong...How did she f**k up this time.

And sixth, Is when you admit - You may have fucked up alittle.
